Mechanical door opening mechanism, (MDOM)

Definition.

This is a specialized upright handle that is intended to make it easy to open a door by using the inner part of your wrist or lower arm without having to involve your hands, thus preventing the spread of infection, especially in public spaces like hospitals, restaurants, schools and many other spaces where there is a risk of infection. It is for the MAIN toilet exit door and not in the individual toilet depending on the structure design of the toilet area.

Product Structure.

This is a simple L shaped device that is carved with one part longer than the other, like an elbow, and is easily pulled or pushed without the use of hands by using the inner part of your forearm wrist, or elbow or the outer parts of the same as will be shown the diagram. It provides an extra space between it and the door which allows a wrist or elbow to go over.

The handle will have a square attachment surface at the shorter end, and it will be this part of the device that will be used to attach it to a door. A square hole, with a strong iron enforcement will be found in the middle of this attachment and will be made of a durable material. It will have 4 to 6 holes through which screws will go and will extend to the other opposite side of the door, screwing it firmly to it. The controlling, square rod will be inserted in the door opening machine so that it can run the opening and/or closing procedures by unhooking the door from the frame.

The small handles will be removed to allow this device to be attached in that space. The shorter arm will have a certain distance away from the door surface to allow any size of arm to go over it and allow it to move from side to side depending on where it is pulled or pushed. This will allow for a space in between the door and the handle making it easy for any size of arm to go over it and run it. A specialized type of material which is light but extraordinarily strong will be used for this purpose.

After using a toilet in most instances, normally you will wash your hands and dry them, thereafter you will have to hold the door handle to pull the door and get out of the toilet through the main toilet exit door. That handle might be contaminated with germs as there is no guarantee that other patrons before you washed their hands properly and you might pick those germs too. That is the problem we are trying to solve.

Problem.

Contact with door handles in restrooms can lead to the spread of infection.

In the instance of the mechanical door opening mechanism, after using the toilet, washing your hands and drying them, on leaving the toilet you don’t have to touch the door handle, you just have to apply your elbow over the  door handle or against it and with your inner elbow you open by pulling the door towards you, or you might have to push it away from you, depending on the door design and the arm you are using, left or right, after which you will finish opening the door by further pushing or pulling it with your foot if the door has a door closing machine at the top. This is particularly important because sometimes you cannot use your elbow to fully open the door.

Our first product will be used to figure out how many people will use our handle correctly as a means of research, checking if fingerprints are showing on the product or not. If there are no fingerprints picked up it will mean that people are using the handle properly.

It Is important to note that this product is merely meant to prevent infection or the spread of. It is so annoying that after washing your hands in a public toilet you still have to touch the door handle again before you leave. This product is going to revolutionize the way people think about toilet hygiene.

The way this product will work will depend on the toughness of its mounting. Therefore, mounting this product to the door will be the most important part in the development because if it is not professionally installed it will easily be detached from the door. The attachment area which has screws will be installed in a way that the screws will extend to the other side of the door where washers would be applied so that it is firmly applied and cannot be easily detached.

Using elbows or wrists when opening a door will make it easy for people not to be obliged to use hands as hands touch a lot of other things including food, as we go around doing our daily activities. A demonstration video will be conducted where an illustration of how this handle will work.

Door makers will be approached once the system development has been completed to avoid wasting time on unnecessary development procedures.

A willing company will be asked to take on the development of this product, we will be watching to see if the development of the project meets our standards. A lot of research will be conducted in the meantime. We will have to look for companies which are already in the industry and know exactly what is needed for this type of equipment. A patent must be done to protect our idea.

A Handless-Door handle will be easily run by using the inner curve of your elbow or forearm to pull, or the outer part of your elbow or forearm to push the door, thus opening or closing it depending on its design or the hand you are using, left or right.

Product development:

This product will be developed from scratch as it has never been seen anywhere. The type of material that will be used will be researched properly, making sure that it will be strong, and not cause any skin irritation or any type of allergies that might affect customers. Once installed a small diagram to show how it is used, it will be displayed close to the door handle for customers to use as a manual.

The product will Be used as a way of opening and closing the door without use of hands. The whole product would be designed in such a way that it fits in all types of doors. It will be created using an exceptionally light stainless steel which will be easy to clean with antiseptic and/or antibacterial chemicals without it getting damaged, making sure that it does not affect the human skin adversely.

Our target market is public businesses like restaurants, malls, hospitals, schools and universities, airports and many more. Wherever there is a public toilet this product can be used because the spread of infection and gems basically happens in these places. Through research we have found on the type of gems that normally are carried around in our hands is going to be done, like E-coli which is a gem that stays naturally in our rectum but becomes dangerous when it is ingested by mouth.

Installation.

Installing this door handle called Handless-Door handle will be easy. The small handle that is installed in most of the doors will be removed, leaving the inner part of the door operating machine and square pin in place. These 4 cornered pins that are rolled to open the door will be left in situ also. The Handless-Door handle will come with 4-connered holes on both sides, and this is through which this 4-connered pin will go and will continue to work normally when you push the handle to the right opposite the proximal door frame and open the door.

The only difference is that the elbow door will have an elbow like extension where a person will use the inner or outer part of their elbow or lower hand to open or close the door as will be shown in a video. This is where the name Handless-Door handle comes from because the handle does not have to be operated by hand to run it.

Emphasis will be made to the toilet users not to touch that door handle with their hands after use of a public toilet. Stress will be made that this elbow hug is installed in the inner part off the toilet because that is when you do not want to touch handles on exit of the toilet space. The outer handle can be left in situ or if preferred by a customer, can also be changed to be a Handless-Door handle.

As mentioned before the metal that will be used to create this product is exceptionally light but extraordinarily strong, thus there will be no gravity strain on the door by the weight of the product. It is important to note that the space between the door and the wall sometimes might lead to difficulty in operating the door Handle. This will be solved by making the handle run in the opposite direction of the wall.

Conclusion:

NOTE:

Common Toilet Germs and Viruses:

  • E. coli: This bacterium is commonly found in feces and can cause severe gastrointestinal infections if ingested, especially in children.
